Why should I join AKF?

Akademisk Korforening is a large, mixed choir with a high artistic level and a friendly social atmosphere. We enjoy each other's company during rehearsals and also have social events tied to our concerts. Here are three reasons why you should join:

Large Works with Choir and Orchestra

We perform pieces by composers such as Mozart, Brahms, Verdi, Bach, Schubert, and Dvorak. In addition, we sing a varied a cappella repertoire that requires flexibility and variation in vocal technique.

Social Events and Seminars

Every January, we gather for a musical and social seminar weekend at Sanner Hotel in Gran. We also host get-togethers after concerts and performances ("Etterleik"), an annual party in November, and a special breakfast on May 17th. Every five years, we celebrate our anniversary.

International Tours

Every other year, we go on a choir tour abroad, collaborating with local choirs and orchestras while enjoying great musical and social experiences. Previous destinations include Warsaw, the Faroe Islands, Brussels, Vilnius, Gotland, and Caen.

Open Rehearsal and Audition

Akademisk Korforening invites you to an open rehearsal and audition at the start of each semester. If you would like to audition, you can contact us at sekretaer@akademiskkorforening.no.

We invite you to join a regular rehearsal first, so you can get to know the choir. After that, we will conduct the audition, which lasts 5-10 minutes. The purpose of the audition is to assess your voice and determine if it fits within the choir. It also helps us place you in the correct vocal group. There’s no need to be nervous, it’s simply an opportunity for us to get to know you as a singer!

The audition consists of:

  • Some ascending and descending pitches to assess your vocal range and tone quality

  • Repetition of notes and intervals to test musical memory

  • A short self-chosen song, one verse or a choral part you’ve sung before

Expectations and Requirements

You must be able to read music and have some singing experience to become a member of the choir. Sight-reading is not a requirement, but it is expected that you practice independently between rehearsals. The choir typically does not accept new members over the age of 55. We especially welcome students and staff from the University of Oslo, but this is not a requirement.
